I have two corner pins identified approximately 1,400 feet apart from each other and I need to make a line connecting the two. There are some light trees/brush between the two pins and some slightly rolling hills - so I cannot see 'pin-to-pin'. A surveyor wanted nearly $1,000 to come out and do it for me and that cant happen. I would like to rent the equipment needed to simply connect the pins.
What equipment shall I ask for at my surveyor equipment rental shop?
Thanks in advance
What tools/equipment do I need to survey a property line between to pins?
First off, you did not say WHY you need to establish the line. For example
1) If you are just clearing brush that is one thing, but if
2) if you are buliding a fence between a spiteful neighbor that is an entirely different matter.
If it is for #2.. then hire the surveyor. No doubt about that at all. If it is for #1 or something like that then continue reading....
Those rolling hills are going to kill you.. There are only two possible ways to do it unless you go REALLY high tech:
1) Can you see both pins from either of the High rolling hill . What about if you errect a tall sight on both of them (a vertical 2x4 that is perfectly plumb and painted red or some high visibility color? If you can, then from that hilltop you can get an old engineers transit (which you can rent from a equipment rental place or by on eBay for about $200) and 'wiggle in'. That means you set it up, sight one of the poles and flip (transit) the instrument so you are looking backwards along the same line. Take note of how much you missed the other pole and move your transit accordingly. Repeat the process until you see both poles in your 'gun' - dead center. You are now on that line. Drop a plumb bob and set a point under your gun/transit. Then start setting line stakes in both direction (or cutting brush) as far as you can go. When you reach the top of the next hill you should be able to see where you came from and continue the process until you reach your corner.
Once you have your line points in you can use a visible laser between these points to help you see the line anywhere in between. You can also rent that laser at the equipment store.
If you can NOT see the the posts, then you are going to have to run a random line from one pin to another and then compute angles and distances from each of those line points to your property line. (THAT is likely why its going to cost a grand for the surveyor to do it.). To do that you need to get a book and read up on traverse and traverse adjustments. But as far as equipment goes it is the same transit with the addition of a steel tape which is at least 100 feet long.
(Personally, I would pay the grand... )
