lease help got home work to hand in tomorrow please help!
i have to describe surveying equipment such as
water level
band
sonictape
hand held lazer
ancillary equipment
cowley level
please help what are they thank you
Surveying descibing surveying equipment?
Some answers, I would also try doing a search on Geomatics as this is what Land Surveying is now soometimes called. If you like the outdoors, have a brain and want to travel Land survey is worth considering for the future.
water level - Normally a clear plastic tube of up to 10 metres in length, each end is normally attached to something like a ruler that with a scale. the tube is filed with water, sometimes coloured, and it is important that there are no bubbles in the water. The water will settle to the same level (or height) at both ends allowing you to compare the level of one point to another. Normally good to about +/-5mm although this principle has been used for extremely high applications wher the liquid surface is measured by laser and accuracies of better than +/- 0.01mm have been acheived.
band - What surveyors call a long measuring tape
sonictape - Uses sound waves and the speed of sound to measure distance to an object. The tape emits a sound, normally ultrasonic, which then bounces of an object then returns to the tape, the time taken is measured, and distance calculated using the speed of sound. This is halved to give the one way distance. All this happens automatically, you just read the distance. Not very accurate and you never be sure what you are measuring too.
hand held lazer - Two types. First distance measurement, simillar to above, but using a red laser instead of sound. You see a red dot so you know exactly what you are measuring too. Accurate to about about +/- 3mm, The second are about the size of a pocket tape and project up to 5 lines out at right angle to each other This can then be used for setting out the corners of buildings etc. Some times these laser lines are on a pendulem assembly, called a compensator that makes the lines either truely horizontal or vertical, allowing you to compare the relative leve of objects or checking they are truely vertical normally accurate to about 3mm over 10 metres
ancillary equipment - Other surveying equipment, tripod, marker pegs, targets, road nails, leveling staffs etc
cowley level - old fashioned piece of equipment that used a mirror on a pendulum to give an optically level view point, it has been so long since I used one I can hardly remember.
Reply:I only really no about theodolites and distos and level datums.
The cowley level is a piece of equipment you use with something called a leveling staff. you look through the eye piece at the staff and take a reading. you would usualy start on a benchmark and work your way round points that you want to find a level value for. taking a foresite and a back site to every point and then closing back on either the same or another benchmark.
The hand held laser could be a disto. A disto is a small piece of equipment that u take measurments with like the size of a room or the height of something.
Sonic Laser Tape???
Uses Sonic wave technology measures distances up to 50 foot with the touch of a button. Laser targeting clearly and accurately indicates end point of measurement.
Calculates area and volume - it does the math!
Memory positions store up to 5 measurements.
Reply:I've never heard of a water level before but a band could just be a measuring tape,
Sonictape uses sound waves emitted from the device and times how long it takes to be reflected back to the instrument and (speed of sound x time taken to reflect back) /2 = Distance to object.
Hand held laser is typically a Leica Disto which emits a laser beam and times how long the laser beam takes to be reflected so (speed of light x time taken to travel back)/2 = Distance to object. Excellent handheld bit of kit.
A cowley level is an optical device used for measuring the height of the ground. This is called levelling - a process where you start at a point at which the height above sea level is known (Datum) and then use the level to check the difference in height between the datum and the bit of ground you are measuring.
Reply:i only know the transit, plane table and theodolite. sorry.
